Why does Thanksgiving fall on a different date every year?
Because the law fixes a weekday, not a date. 5 U.S.C. 6103 reads "Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November." The fourth Thursday can only land between November 22 and November 28, so the date moves a little each year. The OPM schedule shows November 26 for 2026 and November 25 for 2027.
How do you find the fourth Thursday of November?
Find the first Thursday of November and add three weeks. In 2026, November 1 is a Sunday, so the first Thursday is November 5 and the fourth is November 26. This page runs the same rule for every year, so the table covers 2026 to 2032.
