How do you count business days between two dates?

Count every day from the start up to, but not including, the end date, and skip Saturdays, Sundays and the holidays of the list you picked. Tick "Count the end date too" to include the last day. October 11, 2026 to December 25, 2026 spans 75 calendar days: 21 are weekend days, so 54 are weekdays. The US federal list removes 3 more (Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving), leaving 51.

How do you add business days to a date?

Start from the date and move forward one weekday at a time, not counting the start day itself and skipping holidays. Ten business days after Monday, December 21, 2026 is Monday, January 4, 2027 with no list, and Wednesday, January 6, 2027 with the US federal list, because Christmas Day and New Year's Day are skipped. A negative number goes back in time.

Which US federal holidays are skipped?

The list is copied from the US Office of Personnel Management for 2026 and 2027, including the Friday or Monday used when a holiday falls on a weekend, such as Friday, July 3, 2026 for July 4. The full table is below, with the link to the OPM page and the day it was opened.

Which UK bank holidays are skipped?

The list is the England and Wales one published on GOV.UK for 2026 and 2027, with the substitute days already applied, such as Monday, December 28, 2026 for Boxing Day. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different bank holidays and are not included. The table is below.

What if my dates are outside 2026 and 2027?

The calculator does not guess. If the range reaches a year the chosen list does not cover, a warning says which years are missing and that those days were counted as ordinary weekdays. You can still choose "No holidays" to count Monday to Friday only.

Questions about business days

Are business days the same as working days?

Often, but not always. Here a business day is any Monday to Friday that is not on the list you chose. A company that works Saturdays, or a court or bank with its own closing days, will count differently, so use this as a guide and confirm with the party that sets the deadline.

Is the start date counted?

When you count between two dates, yes: the start day counts if it is a business day and the end day does not, unless you tick the box. When you add business days, the start day is never counted.

Does the calculator include half days or local holidays?

No. It knows only the days on the list: no half days, no state or city holidays and no company closures.

How many business days are in a year?

It depends on the year and the list. Choose 1 January to 1 January of the next year and read the result; for example, the tool shows the exact number for 2026 with and without US federal holidays.

Can I use this for a legal deadline?

Use it to plan, not to decide. Court rules, contracts and agencies define their own counting, so check the rule that applies to your deadline.

Not confirmed: Holiday lists exist for 2026 and 2027 only. For the US set we did not find on the OPM page a federal holiday on December 31, 2027 for January 1, 2028 (a Saturday), so it is not on the list. Scotland and Northern Ireland bank holidays are not included.

This is a calculation aid. For payroll, contracts, court deadlines, visas or tax dates, confirm the count with the official calendar of the organisation that sets the deadline. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
