Rules marked as custom (Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Black Friday) rest on habit, not on a law we could cite. Each event page says which kind of source stands behind its date.
Which of these dates change every year?
Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November), Mother’s Day (second Sunday in May), Father’s Day (third Sunday in June) and Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) keep their weekday and move their date. Easter moves the most, because it is calculated. Christmas, New Year’s Day, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, the start of summer and the end of the year keep a fixed date, so only their weekday changes: Christmas 2026 is December 25, 2026 and Christmas 2027 is December 25, 2027.
Which of these are legal public holidays?
In the United States, 5 U.S.C. 6103 lists New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day among the federal holidays; Father’s Day has its own law (36 U.S.C. 109) but is a Sunday observance, and Mother’s Day rests on a 1914 joint resolution. Easter, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Black Friday are not on the OPM list of federal holidays for 2026 and 2027.
How is the number of days until a date counted?
It is the number of calendar days between today and the date, so on the day before it shows 1 and on the day itself it says the date is today. The clock under it counts the exact time left to midnight at the start of that day, in your own time zone.
What if the date has already passed this year?
Every counter jumps to the next occurrence by itself. After Christmas Day, for example, the Christmas page counts to December 25 of the following year.
Questions about counting down to a date
How many days until Christmas?
Open the Christmas page for the live count. Christmas is always December 25.
Can I count down to my own date?
Yes. Use the countdown timer: pick any date, add a title and copy the link.
Are these dates only for the United States?
Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Black Friday follow US rules. Other countries celebrate some of these on other dates, and we did not open sources for them.
Why is Easter not a fixed date?
Because it is set by a rule based on the Moon and the start of spring, which we calculate with a published algorithm. The Easter page shows the dates to 2032.
Is the list sorted by date?
Yes, soonest first, counted from today once the page has read your date.
