How do you work out the day of the year by hand?
Add the lengths of the months before your date and then the day of the month. For October 11, 2026: January to September add up to 273 days (31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30), plus 11 gives 284. In a leap year, add one day to any date after February.
What is an ordinal date such as 2026-284?
It is a year followed by the day number, a compact way to write a date that logistics, manufacturing and some data formats use. ISO 8601 describes this form, though we could not open the paid standard text to quote it. Do not confuse it with the Julian day number used in astronomy, which counts days from a date thousands of years ago.
